What To Expect At Your Dallas In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

To help you pick the appropriate window treatments for your rooms, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By taking samples to you, we can present how various window coverings would work in your room. Now you can create an informed selection by seeing how different products looks with your actual windows.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how does showing you different products at your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Different companies may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will find during your Sunburst visit.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People choosing between window treatment samples.

Start by making an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to show you different options available for your preferred product. We will also show alternatives, so you can be sure that your choice matches your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and talk about what you want in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also inquire about how the room is used and what style you are trying to accomplish. And it’s normal if you don’t know precisely what you’re looking for, as we’ll walk you through your options.

That may require going through different products until we uncover the best window treatment for the room. Most customers need to try out a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the best stain to match your color scheme. We’ll also find all the options available for the covering, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll find the exact measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only need to fit treatments for select rooms. We get multiple measurements because a lot of our clients want to be able to order future window treatments quickly. Finally, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Signs Of A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will give you compentent in-home consultation, there are some actions you should never see from any window treatment rep. It should go without saying, the quality of your consultation experience mirrors the quality of the product.

Primarily, your rep should respect your home. He or she should show up as scheduled, ready to present, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your rep should always give you product and company pamphlets and pricing details.

In regards to pricing, you should be given a complete written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, jotted down on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing information before they take any window measurements. You should always understand how much the final bill will cost you. Don’t forget to ask for references and online reviews.
