Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Dallas

March 02, 2020

While there are many faux wood plantation shutters available in Dallas, they don’t have the same quality.  While some faux wood coverings will last virtually forever without chipping, warping, or fading, other faux wood treatments will begin to wear down in just a short amount of time.

It may be difficult to figure out what’s best about the different faux wood plantation shutters.  But after you learn about the different kinds of faux wood, it will be much easier to figure out which interior shutter will stand the test of time.

The following list examines the different types of faux wood shutters in Dallas and rates them from the least durable to the most best:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some shutter products that use vinyl are mislabeled as a faux wood product.  But make no mistake, vinyl is different from faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick veneer is hard to integrate into a your decor, unlike quality faux wood or real wood shutters.  They may be one of the cheapest plantation shutter products on the market, but you get what you pay for.

Vinyl can also be damaged by heat. It’s not unusual to see vinyl window treatments melt or fade due to extensive exposure to the sun. Since these covering warp, discolor, and have poor insular traits, vinyl shutters do not grant much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if you have hollow louvers.

  • Benefits:

Cheapest of the non-wood plantation shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Looks like plastic; flimsy materials; hollow louvers; low energy efficiency; will warp, splinter or yellow.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

An improvement from vinyl shutters are wrapped plantation shutters.  These window treatments are made of pressed wood, wood chip materials, or glued MDF, and then wrapped with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The window treatments are heavier and can appear much more like a normal wood plantation shutter than their hollow louvered alternatives.

But, synthetic wrapped shutters have many drawbacks. The pressed wood under the outer layer can be extremely porous, leaving the shutter sensitive to humidity and moisture. It’s a common occurance to find a warped or cracked louver or find that the vinyl wrapping has split or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters cannot be custom-fitted for odd shaped windows like arches or octagons.

  • Benefits:

Thicker than vinyl shutters; might resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not preferable for high humidity or high moisture areas. Will absorb moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; synthetic wrap can chip away; warps or cracks easily; no specialty shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters constructed from solid extruded synthetic materials are more durable than any of the other faux wood plantation shutters.  As the synthetic fibers infuse themselves throughout the shutter, they create durable, solid louvers that are more resistant warping.  You will also see that these treatments are more durable and will perform much more like hardwood plantation shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters are also able to be custom-fitted to fit any window shape and size -- even semi-circles.

But a solid extruded shutter is only as well-made as its faux wood recipe.  Some mixtures create a fragile shutter, which can be cracked or chipped by nails or screws during installation. If the faux wood doesn’t have a UV inhibitor, then your window treatments will fade and yellow when exposed to sunlight. Some companies paint their shutters, which also leads to chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More durable shutter that compares favorably to a basswood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the mixture of the faux wood composite.
