Dallas Spring Cleaning Tips

March 13, 2017

Spring is finally in the air, Dallas! If you’ve been huddled inside to hide away from the cold, now’s a great time to crack those windows and think about spring cleaning. You may have your usual spring cleaning plan, but all too frequently homeowners can neglect a few important tasks.

Here are just a few pointers to max out your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you can enjoy the best season in Dallas.

Spring Clean Your Windows

Spring Cleaning Tips Dallas

It’s common to get up in mid-March and realize that the subpar view out your window isn’t caused by winter weather–it’s caused by a dirty window. Spring is an ideal opportunity to deep clean your windows. Get your awesome view back with the following steps.

  • If your window opens, completely open it and clean out any dirt or debris in the sill or track. First clean out as much as you can with the track dry, then use warm soapy water and a rag to clean out the rest. This helps your window operate easier, and make sure your window can shut completely.

  • Spray down the glass with a glass cleaner. You can use either a store-bought chemical cleaner, or mix your own at home with two parts warm water and one part vinegar.

  • Clean the glass with a microfiber cloth. Microfibers are effective at cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks.

Don’t Forget to Clean those Window Treatments

A spotless glass window isn’t worth much the window treatment isn’t similarly clean.

For fabric window treatments like curtains or draperies, cleaning can be a hassle. For thick fabric window coverings, remove them from the wall and take them outdoors to shake and get rid of any loose debris, then pop them in the washer and run on cold water and air dry them. For thinner fabrics, you’ll want to handle them more delicately, and hand-wash them in a sink or tub.

Plantation shutters might be the easiest window treatment to clean. Remove dust by wiping down with a microfiber cloth or duster. For spot cleaning, wipe with a slightly damp cloth to take off the stain, then dry with a cloth.

Give Some Love to Your Appliances

Your refrigerator, oven and washer and dryer are as much pieces of furniture as they are appliances. Especially with newer appliances such as stainless steel appliances, looks can be equally as important as function. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and restore them to the condition they were when you first bought them.

Stainless steel appliances can be polished with a solution made of 1 tsp. dish soap and 1 qt. of warm water, applied with a damp cloth and air-dried.

Get Every Single Surface

You’re likely going to give your floors and walls some long overdue TLC when you do spring clean, but be sure to spread that attention around to some of the most often neglected surfaces. These are just a couple of the spots that are easy to forget when doing your spring cleaning:

  • All handles or switches that hands touch. This could be on the toilet, on electronics, or any other spot in your home.

  • All surfaces in your shower, including the door, base, and soap ledge.

  • The tops of ceiling fans.

  • Underneath appliances - specifically the bigger appliances such as your fridge164 and dishwasher.
