Picking Window Treatments in Dallas for a Contemporary Room

May 02, 2016

When you’re decorating a room in contemporary style, you want your window treatments to reflect that style too. So we talked to Jane Cunningham, Room Resolutions' principal designer, to help our customers understand how to choose window treatments for contemporary rooms in Dallas.

Contemporary décor covers a range of styles which are influenced by the last half of the 20th century. It’s built on softer, cleaner lines. According to Jane, everyone has a slightly different definition of contemporary. Most of the time, people want to open the room up. She’s heard her clients say things like, “I don’t need an ottoman by every chair.” Or “I don’t have to have 15 items on the counter of my house.”

Contemporary homes “give you the freedom to move.” You can bring the outside in - even if you live in a small condo - by expanding your view of the sky, the rain, and the sun in Dallas.

The first step is to unclutter the windows. If you think about your grandparents’ windows, they probably had many layers: shades on top of draperies, shutters, valances, and sheers. It can be claustrophobic. Get rid of the layers. By going with window treatments that are built with clean lines, you can have the contemporary look you desire.

Contemporary Window Treatment Options In Dallas:

Shutters For Contemporary Homes

White plantation shutters in a contemporary room

Plantation shutters work well with contemporary spaces in Dallas. They have wide 4.5” louvers which reflect a contemporary style. And when you add a rear mount tilt rod to these wide louvers, your shutters create crisp lines across the window.

Shutters provide you with light control. The panels can be swung open to the side so that you’ll have an open view of your entire window. And you can choose to install divided shutters where you can have light coming in from the top.

It’s easy to clean shutters, which is something to consider if the windows are usually dusty. Contemporary décor looks best when every surface is clean and polished.

Cunningham recommends Polywood shutters to homeowners interested in window treatments for contemporary rooms. They’re her preferred shutter because won’t warp over the years and their colors stay true.

According to Cunningham, more contemporary spaces have reclaimed wood shutters. They provide a little bit of nostalgia. They highlight the restorative use of hardware. They go well with hardwood flooring to bring together the entire décor of the room. Reclaimed wood shutters allow you to find a new way to incorporate an element from the past. And the new application of reclaimed wood as shutters goes right along with the contemporary style.

Modern Barn Doors

Barn doors are a full scale masterpiece on the wall. Go with as funky of a color as you like. You can go with the restorative look. You can design it to look just like a traditional barn door. And you can make it look contemporary like the hotel you just went to.

Modern barn doors become room separators in places that usually don’t have full doors. For example, when you want to close off your kitchen at certain times.

Barn doors as window coverings are perfect for large windows with enough wall space. Shaker doors exhibit an openness that goes along with a more contemporary style. Hardware makes a large difference. Select stainless steel for a more contemporary look. Or paint a barn door a bold color. If your room had primarily varying shades of white, a red barn door would pop against the wall and enhances the room.

“Barn doors add a conversation piece. The next gathering you have, I guarantee someone is going to have a comment. That’s because people aren’t expecting a barn door on a window.” - Jane Cunningham

Over the years, Cunningham has learned that our homes are part of who we are. They’re also an experience our guests can share with us. And a barn door is part of that experience. Your guests will definitely be talking about them.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are the perfect solution for contemporary rooms that have large scale windows and doors that can be folded into themselves. They’re discretely tucked away and allow you to bring in the outside view.

If you enjoy sleeping with complete room darkness in order to get a restful night’s sleep, roller shades can include room darkening liners. And if you need acoustical help to dampen unwanted noise, combine them with draperies that can be hidden by tying on the window’s sides.

Window Film

Many contemporary rooms we’ve seen in the Dallas area have large windows that can be 25-30 feet in height. And when they face towards the west, the sun can take a toll on the room’s items.

Jane likes to suggest window film to anyone with homes that have large windows. It gives you a wide view of the outdoors, which is exactly what you want for a contemporary room.

The film blocks UV rays. This means your furniture and carpeting maintain their color longer. Window film also helps your home save energy.
