4 Shutter Myths Exposed

April 03, 2017

We make a priority of speaking with homeowners about shutters in Dallas.

And though it may come as a surprise, when we speak to homeowners across DFW, we hear the same few myths about shutters repeated. Let’s take a few minutes to expose some common myths surrounding shutters so you can make the right choice for your home when shopping for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Simple to Install Yourself

Lots of home projects can easily be done by yourself in a single afternoon. Putting in shutters may not be one of them, though.

Installing new shutters can be tricky from the get-go, as the measurements of the lengths and angles of the windows have to be very precise to ensure an easy and snug fit, as well as to ensure that your windows can still open and close. Depending on the shutter material, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, hoisting big shutter panels and installing them straight can present a rough job. If a single step of the process is done incorrectly, you may end up with crooked shutters or draftiness from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Will Make Homes Look Dim

New home designers might opt out of shutters, claiming shutters will make a home look “too dark” or dimly lit. This myth probably comes from being unfamiliar with interior shutters.

Think of this: outside light will always enter through your windows from an angle. Shutters give you the ability to modify that angle by adjusting their louvers, offering you more effective control over how much light comes inside. And don’t forget, shutters are able to swing completely open to let in all the light you could need.

Myth: Shutters Are Expensive

It’s true that shutters aren’t as cheap as your run of the mill blinds from a hardware store. However this myth is more about how you think about shutters. If you’re thinking shutters just as a basic decoration that isn’t expected to survive more than a year or two, then yes, shutters can be fairly expensive. But shutters are a permanent part of your home, and offer multiple benefits: they’re energy efficient and can lower heat and air conditioning bills, they can add to your house’s appraisal value, and shutters can last a lifetime, unlike blinds–which will have to be replaced over and over again.

Myth: Shutters Make a Home Look Old

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” has caused the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it certainly isn’t accurate. While shutters were frequently used in older home styles throughout the years, their straight, clean geometry and neutral shades allow them to fit in just as well with more fashionable, modern designs. Interior shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
